How do you raise rich kids instead of poor, spoiled kids? Has that question ever crossed your mind? It had crossed mine when my kids were younger. I love my children to the point of exhaustion. When I think about it, how could I not?
They are irreplaceable. I took pride and lots of joy in spoiling all three kids. When I bought them their Nintendo Gameboy, I sweetened the gift by tossing in four popular games for each. I even gave them an allowance just for sitting around and breathing.
I was a young parent, and I thought, “Let them have their fun.” At the same time, while they played with their Gameboy. I took advantage of my free time and read books, or I would find something else to do around the house.
It was not long until it became a routine. I noticed how they played for endless hours; we even skipped a few lunches. The obsession ended when I finally disciplined myself for my children’s sake. It was an uphill battle, weening them off the electronic games. I kept pushing to resolve the lack of communication we had.
Eventually, our lives started to change for the better. We told stories, played outdoors, read books, and played board games…
